You’ve probably seen the letters “SH-AWD” after select Acura vehicles, like our new MDX models, but if you aren’t quite sure what it means, Acura of Denville is here to help. More than just a typical all-wheel drive system, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive looks to push the envelope on automotive technology for improved performance, traction, and control. Let’s take a look at how it works.

What is Super Handling All-Wheel Drive?

Designed both to enhance dry-road handling and provide all-weather peace of mind, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) continuously directs engine power to balance weight distribution and regulate available traction. The result is seamless power transitions that translate to some of the most agile handling we’ve experienced behind the wheel. Here’s a bit of what you can expect from a vehicle equipped with this incredible drivetrain:

  • Continuous determination of optimal power distribution, shifting between front and rear wheels.
  • Adjustments for steering angle, wheel speed, lateral G-force, and more.
  • As much as 90% of power is sent to the front wheels when cruising to improve fuel efficiency.
  • Torque can be directed automatically to the rear outer wheel to accelerate through a curve and improve cornering.

You’ll find this impressive drivetrain underpinning Sport Hybrid models like the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid, showing drivers that hybrid vehicles can be tuned for performance while delivering state-of-the-art efficiency. In the Sport Hybrid models, the hybrid electric motors dynamically distribute torque to each rear wheel (or each front wheel on the NSX) for remarkable handling.

What Models Have SH-AWD Available?

Since Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is so impressive, you should probably know which vehicles it’s available on. You can find a version of SH-AWD on the following Acura models:

  • TLX (with V6 engine)
  • MDX
  • MDX Sport Hybrid
  • RLX (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD)
  • NSX (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD)

Which one will you choose?
